Firefly fun facts:
- Fireflies are actually beetles! They aren't flies or bugs.
- Their light does not produce heat.
- Fireflies communicate with each other using light flashes. It usually to attract mates, but is also commonly used to mark territory or warn predators away.
- In 1975 the firefly and ladybug were designated as Tennessee's state insect.
- The chemical that allows them to glow is called luciferin and is also used as a defense tool by making them taste bad to predators.
Attention! Fireflies are beginning to disappear!
Due to habitat loss, pesticides, light pollution, and colection for labratory research on luciferin, fireflies are strting to be seen less and less.
Please be mindful of the pesticides you use and consider how light pollution affects your area.
