Mantis fun facts:
- Mantises can turn their heads a full 180 degrees
- They have two compound eyes that work together to help it decipher visual cues. However, the praying mantis has a single ear located on the underside of its belly, just above its hind legs. This means it cannot determine the direction of a sound or its frequency. What it can do is detect ultrasound, or sound produced by echolocating bats.
- The world's largest praying mantis is the Chinese Mantis, recorded to be approximately 7.08 inches (18cm) long, found in Southern China in 1929.
- They are carnivores that tend to prefer live prey.
- They can see in 3D, which is unusual among insects.
- The European praying mantis officially became Connecticut's state insect on October 1st 1977
- The three most common species are the European Mantis (Mantis religiosa), the Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis), and the Carolina Mantis (Stagmomantis carolina)
